DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Composites experts from Owens Corning (NYSE: OC), a leading global
producer of glass fiber reinforcements for composite systems, will
deliver four technical presentations at CAMX, the Composites and
Advanced Materials Expo to be held this week in Dallas. In addition, the
company will participate in a panel discussion on recycling composite
materials, and will host a discussion on sustainability in the
composites industry. The company’s booth will feature products and
solutions for a range of applications in the automotive, building and
construction, and industrial sectors.
The presentations reflect Owens Corning’s continuous innovation in
processes and composite products, with a notable focus on the role of
composites in addressing sustainability issues.

The presentations include:
Leadership in Energy & Environment Design (LEED) v4: Transformation
through Transparency, Health & Achievement. In this practical
session, Gale Tedhams, Director, Products and Supply Chain
Sustainability, will share information to help participants understand
the impact of the newest LEED rating program on the rating systems for
interiors, building design and construction. The presentation will
cover new programs, credits and concepts introduced to measure
building performance, and the importance of transparency through
disclosure as well as third-party certifications. Tuesday, Oct. 27
at 2 p.m. CT.
How Glass Reinforcements Choice Can Effect Bow In Pultruded Parts. Presented
by Kevin Spoo, Senior Research Associate, this paper highlights bow in
pultruded parts, which is different from the dimensional changes
caused by resin. The choice of glass fiber reinforcement can cause a
stress differential, which can cause issues of bow through the
cross-section of a pultruded part. In the experiment that will be
discussed, two types of glass reinforcements were fed into a
pultrusion die with all other parameters of the system being equal. Tuesday,

LCA for Composites and its Impact on Sustainability. Dhruv
Raina, Corporate Sustainability Leader, will address many questions
related to composites sustainability, including which business markets
are most affected, what other countries are doing,the role of Life
Cycle Analysis, and the role of recycling in the overall
sustainability picture. Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 8 a.m. CT.
Vehicle Light Weighting - A Greener, Composite Solution (for Class
A Body Panels Using SMC). Dhruv Raina, Corporate Sustainability
Leader, and Michael Hiltunen of CSP, will present a study on a decklid
part that includes strategies for material light weighting and its
impact on the environment. In the past TCA®1, a sheet
molding compound widely used in body panel applications in the
automotive and heavy truck segments, has offered more than a 20%
weight reduction when compared to similar parts in steel. The
presenters will discuss the development of a new Class A, low-density
sheet molding compound, TCA Ultra Lite®, that is 37%
lighter than TCA. The discussion will highlight how improvements in
material and process technology, and new emerging fibers in
discontinuous and continuous formats, including recycled and virgin
carbon fiber, can be used effectively to obtain additional weight
reduction. Thursday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. CT.

Recycling Composite Materials - Challenges and Solutions. Dave
Hartman, Senior Technical Staff, will represent Owens Corning in this
panel discussion moderated by The Boeing Co. Hartman will address the
topic as it relates to fiberglass. Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 9 a.m. CT.
Sustainability in the Composites Industry. Frank
O’Brien-Bernini, Chief Sustainability Officer of Owens Corning, will
host an informal industry panel discussion.Senior executives
from four prominent composites companies will offer their perspectives
on various sustainability topics related to glass reinforced composites.
